Sergeant Stephen Anderson   Royal Signals

Picture1939-45 Star. Africa Star. Burma Star. Defence Medal. War Medal 1939-45. General Service Medal. Efficiency Medal 'Territorial'. Pakistan Medal.
The Man   Very little is known about Stephen Anderson except that he joined the Royal Signals Territorial Army before World War II with service number 2587508, serving in the North African and Burma campaigns for which he was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 and in Army Order no 20 of 23rd February 1954 the Efficiency Medal’ Territorial’ as a Corporal.

He appears to have transferred into the regular army at some time and was present in Pakistan, being awarded The Pakistan Medal, (Urdu: تمغہِ پاکستان, romanised: Tamgha-e-Pakistan).  The medal was established by King George VI in 1949 to commemorate service during the period just before and after the creation of the independent Dominion of Pakistan on 14 August 1947. Most recipients were members of the armed forces of Pakistan, including attached British personnel.

Anderson then saw service in Operation Musketeer the Anglo-French plan for the invasion of the Suez canal zone to capture the Suez Canal during the Suez Crisis in 1956, for which he was awarded the General Service Medal, with ‘Near East’ clasp.

The Story   The medals awarded to Stephen Anderson were acquired from Noonans on 14th February 2024 and of interest because of the Efficiency and Pakistan Medal combination, the latter being named.  This combination having being coveted for some years.

Because of the one initial and common surname, there were too many combinations on ancestry.UK to be able to make any definitive link and so the details remain basic, however on release of the WWII medal index cards, it was possible to establish his first name.

Nevertheless and interesting combination and pleasing to have a named Pakistan Medal in the collection.
