Constable William Campbell Ulster Special Constabulary

PictureDefence Medal. Ulster Special Constabulary Long Service Medal
The Man   Sadly nothing is know about William Campbell, due to the large number of people with the same name and lack of a great deal of detail from Northern Ireland.

However, during the war, most Specials served as Ulster Home Guard unusually under the command of the RUC rather than the British Army. However, in Belfast due to the high concentration of people most remained as Specials.

Like all Specials they were unpaid and only received a long service medal for more than 50 duties per year and 15 years’ service, unlike 9 years on the mainland. They patrolled where they lived and were regarded as quite ruthless.

The Story   The medal pair to William Campbell were acquired from E-Bay on 21st July 2025 and of interest simply because of the scarce Ulster Constabulary reverse to the Special Constabulary Medal.
