Warrant Officer Ian Edward Humphries  Air Training Corps

PictureIan Edward Humphries
The Man   Ian Edward Humphries was born during the second quarter of 1948 in Coventry, only son of Albert Edward, an Aeronautical Fitter and Kathleen Emily nee Jones.

Very little information is known about Ian, but in 1976 aged 28 he became a Warrant Officer in the Air Training Corps in 84 (2nd City of Coventry) Squadron, based at Coventry Airport, Baginton.  He had been a cadet previously at 8F (1st City of Coventry) Squadron.

Ian attended numerous camps at RAF Stations and was fully involved with the Corps, he was responsible for leading many Duke of Edinburgh award expeditions enabling cadets to qualify for their bronze, silver or gold awards.  In 1988 he was awarded his Cadet Forces Medal and resigned some years later.

Ian lived all his life with his parents at the family home, 67 Tennyson Road, where his mother doted on him.
Albert passed away 3rd January 2001 and Kathleen on 9th September 2017.

Ian was apparently a great fan of jigsaws and would spend hours working on them.  He also had a partner to whom he was devoted, but sadly she became disabled and he would take her everywhere in her wheelchair until she too passed away.

Ian died on 20th June 2024 aged 76, having suffered dementia.  His funeral service was held on Friday 12th July at 1000h in Charter Chapel, Canley Crematorium.

The Story   The Cadet Forces Medal awarded to Ian Edward Humphries was acquired as a ‘buy it now’ offer on E-Bay on 7th May.

It was of immediate interest as Ian had been personally known during his time in the Air Training Corps, it also came with the box of award and a memorandum requesting more medal ribbon and signed by his OC.  The memo is of particular interest as all four people mentioned it, including Ian, were known personally!

A photograph was obtained from a camp at RAF Honington.

A very brief biography was pieced together from Ancestry and wills, together with personal memories shared by a friend of Ian’s mother who used to visit her.
