Inspector John William Kettleborough  Hull City and Merseyside Police

PictureSilver Juvbilee Medal 1977. Police Exemplary Service Medal.
The Man   John William Kettleborough was born on Tuesday 28th February 1928 Sculcoates, Kingston Upon Hull, son of George William, a Foundry Worker and Ida nee Turner.  He had one sister Jean, born on 19th November 1933.

The 1939 Register shows George and Ida living at 6 Fern Street, Kingston Upon Hull, John living at Thorpe Bassett, a village in North Yorkshire and Jean living at a farm at Thixendale, Yorkshire, possibly both having been evacuated before the war.

John was too young to see service during World War II, but on 11th October 1948 aged 20 he joined the Kingston Upon Hull Police as a Constable with collar number 3512.  He was awarded the Royal Life Saving Society medallion in 1949 as part of his initial training and their Award of Merit the same year, this for advance life preservation skills. These were followed by the Bronze Cross in October 1950.

During the third quarter of 1949 he married Daphne June Webster in York and they had two children David born in 1950 and Ian 1952.

John was promoted to Sergeant and awarded his Police Exemplary Service Medal in about 1971.  Kingston Upon Hull Police were amalgamated into the Humberside Constabulary following Government reorganisation in 1972 and John promoted to Inspector.  He was awarded his Jubilee Medal 1977 at about the time of his impending retirement and aged 49.

In later life John lived with Daphne at 34, Loxley Green, Hull, Yorkshire and Daphne passed away on 1st June 2005.  John’s Son David also died on 19th September 2009 in Lincoln County Hospital, after much suffering and aged just 59.

As he got older John lived at Riverhead Hall Nursing Home Beechwood Lane East Riding and passed away on 13th April 2013 aged 85.

The Story   The medal pair awarded to John William Kettleborough were acquired from E-Bay on 15th September 2024 following an offer made.  They were of interest because of the Silver Jubilee and Police Long Service medal combination to an Inspector.

Despite his unusual name only basic information was available on Ancestry and the Newspaper Archives, but sufficient information to create a brief biography.
