Flight Lieutenant Thomas James Taylor Rodger Royal Air Force and Fife Special Constabulary
Cadet Forces Medal. Special Constabulary Long Service Medal.
The Man Thomas James Taylor Rodger was born in 1932 in Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland and his mother’s maiden name was Taylor.
In March 1950 aged 18 he was called up for his National Service in the Royal Air Force with service number 2481998, from a block 2466000 – 2499999 allotted to NSA recruits (non ATC) at RAF Padgate.
In 1953 he married Agnes Dickinson Fell (surname unknown) and in 1954 they were living at James Square, Gowrie Street, East Fife, in 1955 Royal Building, Tay Street and in 1963 18 Elizabeth Crescent.
In 1960 Thomas joined the Air Training Corps as a Warrant Officer and on 11th December 1963 was Commissioned into the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training) branch. He was promoted to Flying Officer on 11th December 1965 and his service extended for four-year periods on 11th December 1967, 1971 and 1975.
Thomas was elected onto Newport Town Council in 1971, promoted to Flight Lieutenant serving simultaneously in the Fife Special Constabulary. On 12th December 1972 he was awarded his Cadet Forces Medal and at some time his Special Constabulary Long Service Medal.
He resigned form the RAF VR(T) on 28th June 1979 aged 47 and died in 2023 aged 92, Agnes having predeceased him in 2016.
The Story The medal pair awarded to Thomas James Taylor Rodger were acquired from Huntly Auctions, Aberdeen on 10th November 2024 and of interest because of the unusual double long service group, indicating a likely simultaneous service in the Air Training Corps and Special Constabulary.
The box of award for the SCLSM was included and gave the Force as Fife, enabling extremely basic details to be acquired from Ancestry and Scotland’s People, although the latter does have his birth, marriage and death certificate available for purchase if required which will reveal more details.
It seems that Thomas also served on Newport Town Council in the 1970s but no detail can be found to expand on this.
An interesting pair with more detail waiting to be uncovered in due course.
