Sergeant Henry William Saunders  Royal Army Service Corps

Picture
1939-45 Star. France and Germany Star. Defence Medal. War Medal 1939-45. Coronation Medal 1953. Efficiency Medal 'Territorial' and four clasps.
The Man   Little detail is known about Henry William Saunders, except that he enlisted into the Territorial Army, Royal Army Service Corps, with service number T/783399 during the early 1930s.

He was mobilised and embodied at the start of World War II seeing service in Northwest Europe after D-Day on 6th June 1944 and promoted from Driver to Sergeant.

He was awarded his Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’ in Army Order 145 of 1941and following the war the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-45.

Henry remained in the TA after the war and transferred into the 312 Medium Regiment Royal Artillery in May 1947, moving back to the RASC in October. and was awarded the first and second clasps to his EM in Army Order 45 of 1st March 1950 (the latter whilst in the RA).  He was awarded the Coronation Medal 1953 and then his third clasp in AO 51 list 24 of 1954 and his fourth in 1959.

The Story   The medal group awarded to Henry William Saunders were acquired from E-Bay on 16th September 2024 and of interest because of the confirmed and quite scarce four clasped Efficiency Medal, together with the Coronation Medal 1953.

Sadly, little could be found on Ancestry and whilst there was a possible match, nothing could be located to definitively confirm a link.  The award of his Efficiency Medal plus all four clasps were however located on Forces War Records and OMRS.

Nevertheless, a pleasing group to a very long service TA soldier.
