Seaman George Edward Flowers Travell   Royal Navy

Picture1939-45 Star. Atlantic Star. Italy Star. War Medal 1939-45.
The Man   George Edward Flowers Travell was born on Thursday 19th February 1925, son of Charles John Flowers a London Postman and long serving Territorial Army Sergeant and Kathleen Mary nee Gannon.  He was one of eight children, Charles James Flowers (12th September 1922 –killed in Action 11th May 1942 in HMS Bedfordshire), Frederick Charles Flowers (1923 - 1957), Eileen S M (1927- 1963), Kathleen Lucy (1928- ), Margaret Elizabeth Travell (1931–), John Richard (1933 -  ) and David Kenneth (20th February 1936 – 1985).

Following his education, George became a Plumber’s Mate and in 1939 was living with his family in 43 Moorhouse Road, Paddington, London, an address shared with a number of other families.  At the outbreak of World War II the same year, he was only aged 14 and too young too enlist but as soon as he was old enough followed in his older brother Charles’s, who was sadly killed in action in 1942, footsteps and enlisted into the Royal Navy with Service number JX 454550.

George served throughout the war and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Italy Star and War Medal 1939-45.

George returned to 43 Moorhouse Road, where he seems to have lived the rest of his life, being shown there in the 1947, 1950 and 1965 Electoral Registers with varying members of his family over the years.  He also became Manager of the Motorama Club, Kensington High Street, a club frequented by well known people interested in motor racing.  However, in 1961, George was fined £49.00 and £5 3s cost, having been summonsed together with the Club Proprietor for ‘selling drinks outside permitted hours and with a Justices Licence’, the drinks were served to undercover police officers, who were not members and after 11.00pm!

George appears to have never married and passed away on 17th August 2013 aged 88 at The Parish House, Moorhouse Road, London.
