Captain Stanley David Wardle TD*  Royal Army Ordnance Corps

PictureEfficiency Decoration 'Territoeial' (1982) and clasp. Efficiency Medal 'T&AVR'.
The Man   Stanley David Wardle was born in September 1933 in West Derby, Lancashire, son of Philip F Wardle a Heavy Crane Driver and Dorothy nee Peake, Philip having been married previously to Beatrice nee Jones who died young.  Stanley was one of five children, three half siblings Florence B (1911-1944), Harry (1918-2007) and Grace (1921-1979) and full blood Kenneth Norman (1930-2007).

Little detail is known about the rest of his life, except that in 1939 he was living with his family at 26 Graylands Road, Liverpool.  In about 1957 when aged 23 he enlisted into the Territorial Army, Royal Army Pay Corps with service number 22604439 and being promoted to Sergeant.  In Army List 82 of 1969 he was awarded his Efficiency Medal `T&AVR’.

On 20th September 1972 Stanley was Commissioned into the Royal Army Ordnance Corps Territorial & Army Volunteer Reserve as 2nd Lieutenant with a new service number of 494689, promoted to Lieutenant on 20th September 1974 and Captain on 2nd April 1981.

In the London Gazette of 7th December 1982 Stanley was awarded the Efficiency Decoration ‘Territorial’, the T&AVR clasp having reverted to ‘Territorial’ earlier the same year, this was followed by the first clasp to his TD in the Gazette of 29th August 1989.

Stanley retired from the Territorial Army on 1st April 1989 aged 55 and re-enlisted into the Merseyside Army Cadet Force as Lieutenant shortly after and resigned in October the same year, retaining his rank as Captain

On 15th August 2014 Stanley became a director of Georgian House Management Company Ltd and lived at
1 Georgian Place, 46 Andrew`s Lane Formby, Liverpool, Merseyside.

The Story   The medal pair awarded to Stanley David Wardle were acquired from E-Bay on 18th August 2024 and of interest because of the double Long Service combination with both awards having the latter 1967 version ribbon.  This is not the first such in this collection but does have a different long service clasp combination to the other set, awarded to Eric Arthur Wilson.

The London Gazette provided Stanley’s full name from his commissioning date and together with the Army lists provided the dates for award of his Efficiency Medal, Decoration and clasp, all dated correctly and other appointment and promotion details.

Working on the fact the EM ‘’T&AVR’ had been awarded in 1969 and assuming Stanley was about 18 when he joined the TA, this took his possible birth year to approximately 1939 (1969 less 12 years = 1957 less 18 = 1939). His retirement year from the TA was 1989 (1989 – 55 = 1934), plus the fact he had spent a short time with the Army Cadet Force, the details in the LG showing as Merseyside

Thus, a speculative search of births only was made on Ancestry using his full name and 1936, there being only one hit with the middle initial of D, during the last quarter of 1933 in West Derby Lancashire.

Further checking however, drew a blank.  ‘Wardle’ was therefore cross-referenced with marriages only, to his mother’s name of ‘Peake’ from his birth registration in 1933, plus or minus 10 years and in Merseyside.  This resulted in only one possible hit from 1929, in turn leading to a family tree, providing proof, on the balance of probabilities that this is the correct person and the brief biography his.  However the additional information revealed was scant and no details of marriage or death could be found, there being another person with the same name but different middle name to confuse things yet further.

Another pleasing double long service group to the TA with the slightly scarcer 1967 ribbon with a later 1982 ‘Territorial’ suspender to the TD.
