Frank Roland Whyman
The Man Frank Roland Whyman was born on Friday 24th August 1906 in Rugby, son Daniel Benjamin a Domestic Gardener and Mary Elizabeth nee Norris. He was one of five children, Frances Mary born in 1896, Emily 1897, Hilda Mary 1904 and Benjamin James 1914.
The 1911 census shows the family living at 19 Rowland Street, Rugby.
During the 1920s Frank joined the Warwickshire Special Constabulary and in the second quarter of 1931 aged 25 married Emily Clara Dale in Rugby, they had two children, Gordon F born in 1931 and Valerie J 1938.
The 1939 Register shows Frank, aged 33 and his family living at 30 Balcombe Road, Rugby and working as a Sheet Metal Worker, most likely in a reserved occupation and is also shown as a SC.
Frank was awarded his Special Constabulary Long Service Medal in about 1935 and continued serving throughout World War II. He was awarded further clasps to the medal in 1942 and 1946, war service counting treble. Following the war he was awarded his Defence Medal.
Frank remained in the specials following the war and awarded a further clasp to his SCLSM in 1956, representing over 21 years’ service.
Frank passed away in April 1982 aged 75, Clara lived another eight years and died in 1990.

The Story The medals awarded to Frank Roland Whyman were acquired from -Bay on 13th October 2024 and direct from his grandson, who had sadly split the medals on the auction both were bid upon and won, enabling them to be kept together for posterity.
They were of interest because of the three clasped Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, a theme of this collection.
