Eric Wilson SBStJ St John Ambulance Brigade
The Man Little detail is known about Eric Wilson, except that he served during World War II and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-45.
He was a long serving member of the St John Ambulance Brigade and appointed as a Serving Brother and awarded his Service medal with six subsequent clasps, representing over 40 years’ service. He seems also to have been awarded the amalgamated gold clasps at some point. He also served with the Civil Defence and awarded their long service medal.
Additionally Eric worked within the Civil Service and awarded his Imperial Service Medal.
The Story The treble long service group was acquired from E-Bay on 27th October 2024 and of interest because of the three long service medal combination.
They came with a large selection of St John badges, his miniature medals and WWII medal award certificates, indicating that Eric was belatedly awarded his Defence Medal.
Sadly, due to a very common name no details could be confirmed and even the award of his Serving Brother could not be found, additionally there were several Eric Wilsons awarded the Imperial Service Medal within a likely time frame.
Enquiries with the St John Museum may yield details, but unlikely as no date of death can be provided.
A pity for such an interesting group of medals to a man who clearly was committed to St John and Civil Defence for so many years – an interesting story is hidden somewhere.
An example of the importance of retaining relevant paperwork with medals as even a group such as this is sadly not able to be recognised to its full potential
