Major Brian Stanley Joseph Bedford Royal Logistics Corps and Police
The Man Brian Stanley Joseph Bedford was born during the final quarter of 1959 in Hertfordshire, son of Stanley Joseph and Joan M nee Wackett.
Brian seems to have moved to Wales and during 1989 aged 29 joined the Territorial Army with service number 24842956, becoming an Officer Cadet. He was appointed as 2nd Lieutenant, into the Prince of Wales Division Royal Regiment of Wales on 30th July 1989, service number 533201. He married Sandra J Hodson during the last quarter of 1989 in Newport.
Brian was promoted to Lieutenant on 30th July 1991 and on 1st October 1993 transferred into the Royal Logistics Corps. He was promoted to Captain on 5th January 1995 and in 2001 qualified for his Volunteer Reserve Service Medal, this appearing in the London Gazette of 12th February 2002. He was promoted to Major on 1st July 2001 and in 2002 awarded the Golden Jubilee Medal 2002.
Brian left the TA at about this time and joined the Police Force where he served for the next 20 years being awarded his Police Exemplary Service Medal as a Constable and the Diamond Jubilee Medal 2012.
No further detail is known about Brian Bedford.
The Story The medals awarded to Brian Stanley Joseph Bedford were acquired from Stephen Wheeler Medals in January 2024 and of immediate interest because of the, not often currently seen, combination of the Police Exemplary Service and Volunteer Reserve Service Medal, the latter named to him as Captain. It transpired the medals had previously been on sale on the War and Son website.
Despite Brian’s three first names, little detail could be found apart from birth and marriage and London Gazette entries.
Interestingly Brian was a Major in the TA and remained a PC in the Police. The timelines of his later service are unknown, but it seems likely he joined the Police after the TA as he does not seem eligible for clasps to his VRSM and yet was awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
At the time of writing (2024) Brian would be aged 65 and feasibly still alive.
