Corporal Ronald Stanley Burgess Kings Own Royal Regiment
The Man Ronald Stanley Burgess was born on Monday 3rd May 1920 son of Frank Harold, a Joiner and Emily nee Saunders. The family lived at 341 Kennington Road, Kennington and he was Baptised at St Mark, Lambeth on 30th May, his religion was Church of England. Ronald was one of three children, Frank Leonard (1910-1989) and Winifred Emily (1912-1932).
Following his education Ronald became a Printer and on 6th February 1939 at Merton enlisted in the Territorial Army, Royal Engineers with service number 2080970. He was described as 5’.8” tall, weighing 122lbs, 33½ “ girth , fresh complexion, blue eyes and fair hair with a small scar in the centre of his forehead.
The 1939 Register shows his parents living at 93 Stuart Road, Wimbledon, Ronald having already been called up and embodied at the outbreak of War on 3rd September.
On 1st August 1940 he was transferred to the Royal Artillery and on 16th December to the King’s Own Royal Regiment, serving at home during the War and working as a Clerk in the Orderly Room from 9th April 1941 and at No 238 German Prisoner of War Working Camp, Norton Camp, Cinderhill Lane, Norton, Sheffield.
On 18th October 1941, Ronald married Joan Anita Robinson in Surrey and they had one daughter, Mary Katherine born on 16th October 1945. The family address was 47 Lyveden Road, Tooting, London. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 13th April 1943, paid Acting Corporal 18th June 1945 and War Substantive Corporal 16th September 1945. Ronald was discharged from the army on 8th June 1946 and transferred to the Z class Reserve and awarded the Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 and in Army Order 69 of 30th April 1946 his Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’.
No detail is know of Ronald’s later life except that Joan passed away on 9th April 1984 living at 8 Mount Pleasant Road, Lingfield, Surrey and Ronald aged 74 in the last quarter of 1994 in Henley, Oxfordshire.
