A Friend to Many
Special Inspector Albert Salisbury Clark Humberside Police
The Man Albert Salisbury Clark Albert Salisbury Clark was born on Wednesday 9th November 1910 in Eccleshall, Stafford son of Albert senior, a Tramway Motorman and Amanda and in 1911 the family were living at 17 Rushdale Road, Sheffield.
During the 2nd quarter of 1933 aged 22 Albert married Winifred Swift in Sheffield and the 1939 Register shows them living at 123 High Street, Sheffield together with 77-year-old Agnes Mary Swift, Winifred’s mother or Grandmother. Albert’s occupation was Cinema Projectionist and Winifred a Housewife and Cinema Attendant.
Albert saw no active service during World War II but did serve in one of the home defence organisations such as the Home Guard or Air Raid Precaution and at the end of the war awarded the Defence Medal.
In about 1950 he joined the Humberside Special Constabulary and served for at least the next 29 years being promoted to Special Inspector. He was awarded his Special Constabulary Long Service Medal in about 1959 and Long Service clasps in 1969 and 1979, the latter when aged 69!
In 1974 Humberside Police was created following a merger of previous forces under the Local Government Act 1972, along with the non-metropolitan county of Humberside. Albert was transferred to the new force and in 1977 awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal as a Special Inspector.
Winifred seems to have passed away as in the third quarter of 1977 he re-married to Nellie Swift, possibly Winifred’s sister in Scunthorpe.
Albert lived at 62 Westfield Road, Barton Upon Humber, Humberside and in later life following Winifred and Nellie’s deaths at Haverholme House Nursing Home, Appleby, Scunthorpe. He died aged 94 on 17th January 2005.
His obituary described him as a ‘dear uncle and friend to many’. His funeral was held at the Roman Catholic Church of St Augustine Websters on Wednesday 26th January 2005 at 1215h and it was followed by a committal at Woodlands Crematorium, Scunthorpe. Donations were made to the British Heart Foundation.
