Corporal G H Clough  Royal Engineers

PictureGeneral Service Medal 'Near East'. Efficiency Medal 'Army Emergency Reserve' & clasp.
The Man   G H Clough enlisted into the Royal Engineers Army Emergency Reserve with service number 22568710 as a Sapper in about 1953, and was later promoted to Corporal.
During 1956 he saw service in the Near East – Operation Musketeer - following the Egyptian Nationalisation of the Suez Canal, and awarded the General Service Medal with clasp ‘Near East’.  He was also awarded the Efficiency Medal ‘Army Emergency Reserve’ in 1965 and a further long service clasp representing 18 years service in 1970.  His medal was one of 589 to the Royal Engineers.

The Story  The pair of medals awarded to G H Clough were acquired following a private deal on 26th June 2015 and following an initial E-Bay listing.  They were of interest because of the Efficiency Medal ‘Army Emergency Reserve’ with a long service clasp; the first such in this collection and quite scarce, and the named General Service medal.  John Tamplin’s bible, ‘The Army Emergency Reserve Decoration & The Efficiency Medal (Army Emergency Reserve)’ by Spink 1989, was consulted and confirmed the award of the EM and clasp in 1965 and 1970 respectively.  Although no detail can be found on G H Clough this is quite a scarce group due to the clasp on the EM.
