Service With Honor
Councillor Honor Cox Mayor of Solihull
Honor M Cox
The Woman Honor M Cox was born in 1926, her Father George Carter having been an independent Councillor. She lived in Solihull most of her life; working at Solihull College for over 30 years from the early 1960s until her retirement aged 65. She rose to head of maths and general studies at the college. She became interested in politics and the Liberal Party whilst at the University of London, but as a Council employee could not stand for election. Honor was married and had three children and five grandchildren. She was elected on to Solihull Council in 1991 representing the Liberal Democrats in Olton Ward and made Mayor of Solihull in 2000 with her daughter Marilyn Dixon as Mayoress. During her term of office met the then President of the United States, Bill Clinton. Honor lived in Rectory Gardens in Solihull and was involved in the Alzheimer’s Society and a Governor at Langley School. She had the distinction of being Solihull’s oldest Councillor. Honor reported feeling unwell over the weekend of 30th and 31st October, she was taken into hospital and died on Monday 1st November 2010. She was described as a formidable lady, a fantastic character and a true Liberal who was involved with so many things.
The Story The Past Mayor’s Jewel awarded to Councillor Honor Cox was acquired from a dealer following another purchase from him which had been on E-Bay. As Solihull is so close and I used to work in the town, and actually recalled the name of the past Mayor, it had to be added to the collection. Basic research was undertaken on the internet from the Solihull Times, and a photograph of Honor in her Mayoral robes taken following a visit to the Council House.
