Divisional Officer Agnes Kathleen Geraghty SSStJ St. John Ambulance
Serving Sister of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.
Service Medal of the Order of St.John & 9 bars.
The Woman Agnes Kathleen Geraghty was born in Coventry on 13th December 1913, her mother’s maiden name was Wilson. She lived in Coventry all of her life and became a long serving member of the St John Ambulance Brigade with number 9055/H and promoted to Divisional Officer. She was awarded her St John Long Service Medal in 1957 and appointed as a Serving Sister of the Order in the London Gazette of 2nd July 1963. Agnes lived at 17 Yewdale Crescent, Potters Green, Coventry and her name is commemorated at the Holyhead Road Headquarters. She died on 17th April 1994 aged 80.
The Story The pair of St John medals awarded to Agnes Kathleen Geraghty were acquired from John Hardy, the Coventry Area St John Commissioner, shortly after Agnes’ death in April 1994, the medals having been placed on her coffin for her funeral.
She had left her medals to Coventry St John in order that her memory could be perpetuated, and it was agreed by the family they could be included in this collection for that reason.
Shortly after her death Agnes’ sister was spoken to in order to acquire a more detailed biography, but sadly the contact not pursued at that time. Brief details have however been taken from Ancestry.UK and the London Gazette enabling a simple biography to be prepared.
This group of medals is one I have only been able to find a minimal amount of detail on. They are in effect 'work in progress' as one day something additional may well be uncovered. Please feel free to contact me should you know of, or have any information on this lady.
