Councillor Robert Frederick Jarred Mayor of Boothferry 1991-92
The Man Robert Frederick Jarred (Rob) was born during the first quarter of 1942 in Home-On-Spalding Moor, Yorkshire, son of Frederick, a Farming Assistant and Betty nee Backhouse, seemingly an only child.
Frederick passed away in 1954 when Rob was aged just 12 and at School. After his education, Rob became a Farmer at Riverside Farm, Skelton, near Howden and during the first quarter of 1965 aged 23 married Dorothy Wilkinson in the Pontefract.
At some point Rob became involved with local Politics and elected as a Conservative Councillor onto one of the local Parish Councils representing Howdenshire Ward. On 1st April 1974 following local government reorganisation, the Borough of Boothferry was created, a local government district with borough status within the non-metropolitan county of Humberside, absorbing all of the former parish councils. It lasted until 1996 when following further reorganisation the district was split between the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
Rob continued to serve on the new Boothferry Borough Council, becoming its 17th Mayor in May 1991.He was joint chairman of the Borough plans committee, chairman of the Howden Minster Appeal Committee together with numerous of council responsibilities and committees. His keen intentions as a Councillor were to try and retain village identities, better highway maintenance and to stamp out rural crime. Dorothy was a Trustee for the Howden Relief in Need Charity.
Rob was also a keen bowler and member of the local bowls club, in later life during the 2000s he lived with Dorothy at 6 Treeton Road, Howden and 11 Bellcross Lane, Howden.
It is feasible at the time of writing (2024) that Rob and Dorothy are still alive.

The Story The Past Mayor and Mayoress Jewels presented to Rob and Dorothy Jarred were acquired from E-Bay on 3rd May 2024.
The Past Mayors jewel had been seen and watched for some weeks and not sold. Eventually the temptation became too much, an offer was made and at the same time the vendors other items were perused, only to find the Mayoress’s Jewel was listed separately.
The Mayoress Jewel was a deciding factor and to keep the pair together an offer was made and accepted.
Thanks largely to the Newspaper archives, which uncovered Robert’s first name and the fact he was known as Rob, a brief biography could be completed from the archive and Ancestry.
An interesting piece of civic history, from a Borough that was only in existence for 22 years, a relatively short time.
