An Air Change
Aircraftsman & Private R W Jewitt Royal Air Force & Royal Military Police
The Man R W Jewitt was born in 1928 and having been a member of the Air Training Corps and too young to see service during the Second World War, joined circa September 1946 the Royal Air Force as an Aircraftman 2nd Class with service number 3215151. He saw service in Palestine during the Jewish Revolt and awarded the General Service Medal with clasp ‘Palestine 1945-48’. His RAF Volunteer Reserve number 3215151 was from a block 3200001 - 3230000 allocated to ex ATC Cadets - Combined Recruiting Centres from June 1943. He went on to serve as a Senior Aircraftman with a new service number 2691028, in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, enlisting on 18th March 1949 and awarded the Air Efficiency Award on 18th March 1959, it appearing in Air Ministry Order N775/1960 dated 19th October 1960. His RAAF number 2691028 was from a block 2600000 - 2699999 allocated to the RAFVR and RAuxAF from September 1946 (ref Wg Cdr Jim Routledge's article in the OMRS Miscellany of Honours 1992 - "The Official Numbering System Of The Royal Air Force). No other detail is currently known about R W Jewitt.
The Story The interesting and scare combination of medals to R W Jewitt were first seen at the OMRS Convention in Stratford Upon Avon in September 2017, but not acquired until over a year later on 24th December 2018 from The London Medal Company. They were of interest because of the double long service awards and from two separate services of the Armed Forces. Apart from information contained with the lot, it has not been possible to find more information on R W Jewitt from Ancestry.UK, there being two – Roy William and Robert William born at about the same time in 1928 and either could have been ‘the man’.
