My Name is John Johnson
Captain John William Johnson Royal Army Service Corps
1914-15 Star. 1914-18 British War Medal. Victory Medal. Defence Medal. War Medal 1939-45. Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. Efficiency Medal 'Territorial'.
The Man Little detail is know about John William Johnson, except that he enlisted into the Army Service Corps as a Private and Driver early in 1914, landing in France on 22nd March 1915 where he served for the duration of World War I. John has a total of four service numbers, S4/036368, S/5694, T4036368, S/42176 and was awarded the1914-15 Star and 1914-18 British War and Victory Medals. It seems John remained in the Army as he received the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal prior to 1935. He also enlisted into the Territorial Army, possibly Yeomanry as on 2nd January 1940, after the outbreak of World War II he was Commissioned as Lieutenant Quarter Master into the Royal Army Service Corps with a fifth service number 111367. Three years later on 2nd January 1943 he was promoted to Captain serving for the duration of the war at home and awarded the Defence and War Medal 1939-45. In the London Gazette of 20th March 1947 John was awarded the Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’ and disappeared from the Army Lists the same year.
The Story This set of medals were only acquired by chance, following the release of a similar set back to the family. A regular Army Long Service and Efficiency Medal combination have always been coveted, as has an Efficiency Medal named to an Officer; this group, unlike the other, contains both. The name, John William Johnson is very popular and as such it has been difficult to locate any further detail from ancestry.com. However following about five hours trawling through the London Gazette looking at numerous combinations, John's Commission and award of the Efficiency Medal were found. An interesting long service group covering both World Wars and long service in the regular and reserve forces.
This group of medals is one I have only been able to find a minimal amount of detail on. They are in effect 'work in progress' as one day something additional may well be uncovered. Please feel free to contact me should you know of, or have any information on this man.
