Special Constable Maurice Perryman Langham  Special Constabulary

The Man   Maurice Perryman Langham was born on Friday 1st September 1905 in Wellington, Somerset, son of Thomas a Wool Sorter and Maria nee Perryman.  He was one of three children Mildred Perryman (19 Feb 11 – Mar 97) and Herbert Perryman (13 Mar 1899 – 10 Oct 62).

The family lived at 62 Springfield Road in Wellington and on 3rd May 1909, Maurice aged 4 attended Linden Infant School in Wellington.  By 1911 the family were living at 29 Holyoake Street and Maurice still at School.

In the last quarter of 1927 aged 22 Maurice married Norah Helen Alder in Stroud and they had four children, Peter Maurice born in 1928, Mary Avril 1929, Shirley Ann 1934 and Diana Helen who sadly died shortly after her birth.  The 1939 Register shows the family living at 88 Stratford Road in Stroud, but Maurice seems to have been called up into the armed forces in readiness for World War II as he was not listed.

During World War II Maurice saw service in the Burma Campaign and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-45.

Following the war, he returned to the family home in Stratford Road and became a Seedsman and Florist.  Maurice also joined the Special Constabulary and British Red Cross, for which he was awarded the Special Constabulary Long Service Medal and Voluntary Medical Services Medal the latter with a clasp for an additional five years’ service.

In 1963 Maurice and Norah were at the same address in Stratford Road and by 1967 at 35 Mill Farm Drive, Paganhill, Stroud.  Norah passed away on 3rd December 1967 aged 72 and he ashes scattered in the Garden of Remembrance at Cheltenham Crematorium.

Maurice lived another 20 years, passing away himself on 20th October 1987 aged 82 and leaving £97,452.00 (£351,00.00 in 2023).  He requested his body be cremated and his ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance at Cheltenham Crematorium with Norah’s.

The Story   The medal group awarded to Maurice Perryman Langham were acquired from -Bay on 28th May 2023 and of interest because of the unusual combination of Long Service Medals – the Special Constabulary and the Voluntary Medical Service Medal, both named, the latter in full.

Because of Maurice’s unusual name, details were easily found on Ancestry.UK as well as his will, enabling a brief biography to be pieced together.

A pleasing group with an unusual combination.
