Captain and Chief Inspector Stanley Herbert Osborn Royal Army Service Corps and West Midlands Police
The Man Stanley Herbert Osborn was born on Saturday 22nd June 1918 in Aston, Birmingham, son of George Herbert a shop fitter and Mary Elizabeth nee Smallwood.
In about 1936 aged 18, Stanley joined the Birmingham City Police as a Constable and in the 1939 register was shown living at 68 Kenyon Street, in Police accommodation with several other officers.
On 13th June 1940, eight months after the start of World War II, Stanley enlisted into the Royal Engineers service number 2195821. He was stationed at Barton Stacey Camp as part of the Chemical Warfare Company followed by HQ Company and on 13th June 1942 was Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into the Royal Army Service Corps with a Regular Army emergency commission and new service number of 235955. He was promoted to War Substantive Lieutenant on 13th December1942 and Captain on 10th November 1944. He saw service in North Africa and awarded the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-45.
During the first quarter of 1946 he married Gwendoline Dorothy Brown in Gosport, they already had a daughter, Christine Elizabeth born in 1945. He was discharged from the Army and returned to the Birmingham area re-joining the Birmingham City Police.
He was promoted to Sergeant, Inspector and Chief Inspector, being awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal as a Sergeant. In 1974, the Birmingham City Police became part of the West Midlands Police and in 1977 close to his retirement Stanley was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal.
Stanley and Gwendoline continued living in the Birmingham area and he passed away on 27th April 1999 aged 80 living at 18 Max Road, Quinton, Birmingham.

The Story The medals awarded to Stanley Herbert Osborn were acquired from dealer Johnny Sparrow, via Facebook on 26th July 2022 and as part of a package of four groups. They were of interest because of the Police Exemplary Service and Silver Jubilee Medal1977 combination, to a senior ranking Police Officer of the West Midlands Police and former Army Officer.
