Bombardier G Percival Royal Artillery
The Man G Percival was born around 1936 and joined the Territorial Army, Royal Artillery in about 1953 aged 18 or so as a Gunner, with service number 22357824.
In 1965 he was awarded the Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’ appearing in Army Orders of 1966 followed by the first clasp in 1971, appearing in Army Orders 198 of 1975. Once a further six years of service was completed, he returned his clasp in exchange for the Efficiency Medal ‘T&AVR’, following the changes made in 1967, this appearing in Army Order 115 of 1977, by which time he had been promoted to Bombardier.
No further detail is currently known about G Percival.
The Story The pair of medals awarded to G Percival were acquired from Charlies Medals on 25th July 2022 and of immediate interest because of the double long service awards of the Efficiency Medals ‘Territorial’ and ‘T&AVR’. Whilst not the first such combination in this collection, they are first of the simple pair with no clasps and as is usually the case, the clasp to the ‘Territorial’ medal having been returned after a further 12 years in exchange for the T&AVR medal.
Ancestry revealed two possible matches, Gordon or Gerald Percival, but there were too many people with these names born in about 1934 to make a definite link.
