Flight Lieutenant Michael Perry M.Inst AM M Inst LM Royal Air Force and Special Constabulary
The Man Michael Perry was born during the first quarter of 1932 and his mother’s maiden name was Barker.
As a youngster he was a member of the Air Training Corps and in about 1950 joined the Royal Air Force for his National Service with service number 3126816 (from a batch allocated to those who were formerly members of the ATC and enlisted at Padgate between May 1949 and January 1951).
On 11th June 1954, Michael was Commissioned into the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training) Branch as a Pilot Officer with the same service number. On 11th June 1956 he was promoted to Flying Officer and subsequently Flight Lieutenant.
During the third quarter of 1957 he married Alma J Curry in Cornwall and became a Member of the Institute of Advanced Management and Member of the Institute of Leadership and Management.
On 31st October 1965 Michael resigned his commission having been awarded his Cadet Forces Medal on 10th June 1965 and simultaneously serving in the Special Constabulary being awarded their Long Service Medal.
Michael and Alma lived at 38 Roseland Park, Cambourne, Cornwall.
The Story The medal trio awarded to Michael Perry were acquired from Truro Auction Centre via The Saleroom on 7th December 2023. They were of interest because of the Elizabeth II combination of the Cadet Forces and Special Constabulary Long Service Medals.
With the group came a business card belonging to Perry, giving a telephone number code of 01209, this being from Redruth, the exact location of the auction. Assuming the medals had therefore come from a local house clearance and using Redruth as a ‘home town’ enabled basic details to be pieced together on Michael, coupled with The National Archives, London Gazette and John Scott from the BMS for his RAF service.
However, there remain unanswered questions about the group as no relevant record can be found for the award of the Silver Jubilee Medal 1977 nor the clasp to his CFM (which is an Efficiency Medal version in any event).
As the medals were ‘as worn’ they have been retained that way, together with his matching miniatures in order to do Michael no injustice, if he is indeed entitled.
