Sergeant Sydney Ernest Raven Hertfordshire Police
The Man Sydney Ernest Raven (Steve) was born during the third quarter of 1929 in Edmonton, Middlesex and his Mother’s maiden name was Clarke.
Steve joined the Metropolitan Police on 31st October 1949 aged 20 and undertook his initial training at Peel House Training School, Regency Street, Pimlico, London. It was the Metropolitan Police Training School until 1974, when it moved to Hendon.
During the third quarter of 1950 Steve married Dorothy Young in Darlington, Dorothy’s hometown and and they had one son Simon Timothy born in 1956. On 5th March 1952 Steve transferred to the Hertfordshire Constabulary where he was promoted to Sergeant and served at Welwyn Garden City, Berkhamstead and Hemel Hempstead. Later in his career he became a Force Trainer at Bynsham and Henlow.
Steve was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal in 1971 and in 1977 the Silver Jubilee Medal 1977. He retired from the force on 11th October 1978 aged 49 after 29 years’ service.
Following retirement Steve and Dorothy moved to 14 Captain’s Beck, Pinchbeck, Spalding in Lincolnshire. Dorothy died in September 2001 and Steve later moved to Gosberton House Care Home where he died on 3rd November 2019 aged 90 and his funeral service took place at South Lincolnshire Crematorium, Surfleet on Thursday 5th December at 1000h.
