Constable Ronald SMITH Blackburn Borough Police and Lancashire Constabulary
The Man Because of the common name little detail about Ronald Smith is available. He joined Blackburn County Borough Police in about 1947 and transferred to the Lancashire Constabulary upon its merger on 1st April 1969. His collar number was 3606.
He was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal and Silver Jubilee Medal 1977. He was also involved, possibly through his police work with the St John Ambulance and awarded their Service Medal as an Acting Member.
The Story The medal group to Ronald Smith were acquired from Spink Auction on 4th April 2023. They were of interest because of the more unusual combination of the Silver Jubilee Medal 1977, Police exemplary Service and Service Medal of the Order of St John. The latter possibly awarded through his work with the St John in the Police.
Ancestry revealed there are simply too many Ronald Smiths living in Lancashire to even begin trying to narrow down research to a single person.
The lot came with other Lancashire Police badges, but unfortunately The St John Museum could find no trace of a Service Medal being awarded to Ronald Smith. It is possible he was awarded it through his police work with the Brigade and it not recorded on the St John roll, or of course it could be a self-award. However, the medals came mounted as worn with the SMOSJ engraved to Ronald so they will of course remain together.
