A Fitting Group
Sergeant Joseph George Sullivan Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers
The Man Joseph George Sullivan was born on 10th August 1916. Little is known of his early life except that he became a Warehouseman and enlisted into the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers, Territorial Army with service number 2065073 and rank of Craftsman. He was embodied on 25th August 1939 at Multley (sic) when his religion was declared as Church of England and he was described as 5’. 7½” tall, weighing 154lbs with a chest of 36”. His complexion was fresh and he had light brown hair. His medical classification was A1. During the War Joseph saw service in the Italian Campaign and his trade was given as a Fitter Group A Class III. He was posted to Iraq towards the end of the War with 543 Workshop Company REME and released from military service on 17th December 1945. His service was described as excellent and his Lieutenant Colonel wrote “This man has shown that he is a tradesman up to his classification. He is a keen hard worker. His general character is good”. For his war service Joseph was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 and Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’. After the war he was employed by the Home Civil Service working for the Ministry of Defence (Army and Air Force Departments) as a fitter. During the late 1960s Joseph suffered an industrial accident as in February 1970 he was sent a cheque for £300.00 in settlement of his case from the Amalgamated Union of Engineering & Foundry works, London. At this time Joseph was living at 8 Priory Lawn Terrace, Lower Crompton, Plymouth, Devon PL3 5EA. The Story The group of medals awarded to Joseph George Sullivan were acquired from e-bay in April 2012. An interesting group as the man had served in both the Territorial Army and Civil Service. As he was born in 1916 and possibly not in the UK because his Father was from Ireland, it was no possible to establish much detail from ancestry.com. However a brief biography could be pieced together from the small amount of paperwork contained within the lot.
