George Ernest Tapp MBE Deputy Chairman South Eastern Electricity Consultative Council
Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. 1939-45 Star. Italy Star. Defence Medal. War Medal 1939-45. Silver Jubilee Medal 1977.
The Man George Ernest Tapp was born during the second quarter of 1916 in Tunbridge Wells, where he lived all of his life. His religion was Church of England and he served during World War II with service number 11267239 and was involved in the Italian Campaign being awarded the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-45. In the third quarter of 1940 he married Edith Cooper in Tunbridge and was also a member of the Trades Union Congress Trades Councils and awarded their silver merit badge for 21 years service between 1950 and 1971. In 1977 he was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal 1977 as a member of the Weald Disablement Advisory Committee, Employment Service Agency. He was also the Deputy Chairman of the South Eastern Electricity Consultative Council, for which on 3rd June 1978, in the Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed in the Civil Division as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which was Gazetted the same day. George passed away on 10th December 2010 at Fir Tree Nursing Home in Tunbridge Wells aged 94. His funeral service took place on Thursday 30th December 2010 at Tunbridge Wells Crematorium at 1030h. Donations were requested towards Hospice in the Weald in Kent. His obituary appeared in the Kent & Susses Observer from 17th until 23rd December.
The Story These medals were acquired from e-bay and were of interest because of the Silver Jubilee Medal and associated confirmation documentation for it and the MBE. Once they had been secured, the vendor advised they had also acquired George's TUC Bage of Merit, which was engraved with his details. This too was re-united with the medals and the lot collected in person from Milton Keynes on Sunday 21st October 2012. Although the medals are unnamed, it is good to have the documents and a named badge which help preserve the provenance. Because of the engraved details on the TUC badge, especially Tunbridge Wells, it was possible to find additional limited details on George’s life from ancestry.com enabling the above brief biography to be produced. His will was also extracted and relatives traced and the Silver Jubilee Medal Roll unearthed a little more detail. There is therefore much potential for additional research.
This group of medals is one I have only been able to find a minimal amount of detail on. They are in effect 'work in progress' as one day something additional may well be uncovered. Please feel free to contact me should you know of, or have any information on this man.
