Police Constable Barry Roy Barnes West Midlands Police
The Man Barry Roy Barnes was born during the second quarter of 1929 in Nottingham and his mother’s maiden name was Gamble.
In the second quarter of 1951, aged 22 Barry married Iris Harbour in Nottingham and in 1952 they moved to Birmingham, where Barry joined the Birmingham City Police on 18th October with collar Number F230. Following his training at No 4 District Police Training Centre, Mill Reece, Staffordshire, his first beat was around the Ladypool Road area in Birmingham, then populated by many Irish labourers employed in re-building the city after World War II and a difficult patch to police.
Barry was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal in 1974 at about the time Birmingham City Police merged with other forces to become the West Midlands Police. Three years later in 1977 he was also awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal 1977, probably on or close to his retirement aged 48.
In later life Barry lived at 3 Heath Road, Hollywood, Birmingham followed by a retirement home in Cumbria where he was still residing in 2020 aged 91.

The Story The medals awarded to Barry Roy Barnes were acquired from E-Bay following some negotiation in July 2020 and of interest because of the Police Exemplary Service and Silver Jubilee Medal 1997 combination.
Following contact with the West Midlands Police Museum two photographs of Barry were acquired and subsequent contact with his son. A trawl of Ancestry.UK and details from his family allowed a brief biography to be completed. |
