Constable Joseph George Keynes Royal Navy and Dorset Poloice
The Man Joseph George Keyne (George) was born in Poole Dorset on 10th December 1926 son of Harry Bond a Corporation Labourer and Kate nee Samways. He had a sister Winifred Beatrice born in 1916.
By 1939 George aged 12 was still at school and living with his parents at 176 Wimborne Road, Poole, his father being an ARP Warden and First Aider.
On his 19th Birthday in December 1944 George was conscripted into the Royal Navy as Ordinary Seaman with service number JX 538884 seeing service at the tail end of World War II and being awarded the War Medal 1939-45.
During the second quarter of 1950 aged 24 George married Melda Katherine May Bartlett in Poole, they had one daughter, Janet E Keynes born in 1953.
On leaving the RN and in 1952 now aged 26 George joined the Dorset and Bournemouth Police with collar number 304 and attended No 7 District Police Training Centre, ‘Chantmarle’ Cattictock Dorset from 31st March – June 28th 1952, class No 6 for his initial training.
He appears to have had a successful police career as in November 1970 he was pictured in the Poole and Dorset Herald with the Chief Constable at a Police Ball held at Rockley Sands where guests danced to the Joe Loss Orchestra and on 3rd – 7th January 1972 attended a Senior Constables Course at Weymouth College of Education, Dorchester Road, Weymouth.

In 1974 he was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal and in the same year the Bournemouth and Dorset Police were merged with Bournemouth Borough and taking over some areas of Christchurch and its hinterland from Hampshire Constabulary to acquire the name of Dorset Police.
In 1977 aged 51 and possibly close to retirement George was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal 1977 In later life George lived at 64 Plantation Road Poole and died on 8th July 1984 aged 58 years. Melda lived a further 36 years and passed away on 6th July 2020. |
