Corporal Stanley Oldfield Lownds Royal Army Medical Corps and St John Ambulance Brigade
The Man Stanley Oldfield Lownds was born on Monday 7th October 1907 in West Gorton, Manchester, Son of Colin a Car Driver for the Manchester Corporation and Miriam nee Oldfield. He had one sister Phyllis Mary (1908-1976).
He was baptised at Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Hyde Road in West Gorton on 26th November 1907 and by 1911 the family were living at 6 Ellesmere Place, Longlight Lane Manchester.
During the second quarter of 1934 aged 27 Stanley married Annie Hawkins in Manchester, living at 18 Westholme Avenue, Stockport, they appear to have had no children. During the latter part of the decade he enlisted into one of the Manchester Regiments Territorial Army with service number 3519411, as well as the St John Ambulance Brigade. He was called up before the beginning of World War II and in the 1939 register, Annie is shown as a housewife.
Stanley was transferred into the Royal Army Medical Corps, possibly because of his knowledge within St John seeing service at home for the duration of the war for which he was awarded the Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-45.
In Army Order 27 of 1948 he was awarded the Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’ and in 1950 his Service Medal of the Order of St John, followed by two additional clasps in 1955 and 1960.
Stanley passed away on 30th April 1982 aged 74 still living at 18 Westholme Avenue and Annie five years later on 29th January 1987.

The Story The medal group to Stanley Oldfield Lownds were acquired from Johnny Sparrow via a private Facebook deal, on 17th September 2022 and of interest because of the double long service combination.
