Sergeant Raymond Leslie Oxley Kent Special Constabulary and Royal Artillery
The Man Raymond Leslie Oxley was born on Tuesday 13th April 1926 in Maidstone, Kent son of Leslie Elgar, a Foreman Confectioner and Amelia Maud, nee Pearmain.
By 1939 the family were living at 135 Bower Street in Maidstone and Leslie now aged 13 was still at school.
During World War II and on 20th September 1943 aged 17 years and 5 months old, Raymond enlisted into the 4th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery with service number 14495642, serving for the remainder of the war and being posted to India.
During the first quarter of 1947 aged 21 he married Annie Margaret Cawthorne in Chatham and on 30th November 1947 was released from the Army to the Z Class Reserve and awarded the War Medal 1939-45.
Raymond joined the Kent Special Constabulary in 1955 aged 29 and promoted to Sergeant, he was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1964 after nine years’ service. He was further awarded long service clasps in 1974 and 1984 representing 29 years as a Special Constable.
Annie died on 2nd May 1979 aged just 55 at which time they were living at Pleasant Valley, Egerton in Kent. Raymond passed away 30 years later on 2nd March 2009 aged 83 in West Malling, Kent.

The Story The medals awarded to Raymond Oxley were acquired from E-bay on 14th May 2021 and of interest because of the relatively recent clasps to the Long Service Medal – 1974 and 1984, the latter holding some ‘Orwellian’ significance.
