The Man Laurie Edwin (Fred) Pacy was born on Friday 6th December 1935 in Norton Disney, Lincolnshire, son Arthur James and Ada Mabel nee Seymour their only child.
Little detail is known about his early life except that following his education aged about 15 in 1950 he enlisted into the Royal Marines as a Musician with service number RMBX/2869. He served in HMS Terror, the accommodation barracks at HMS Sultan, Singapore during the early 1960s.
On Saturday 24th September 1960 at St Peter’s Church, Hersham, Surrey, Fred married Margaret Alice Harrison. His best man was fellow RM Musician R Legge and they both wore their unform for the service. The Reverend H H Hargroves conducted the service and their reception was held at St Peters house with 84 guests. They had one son, Keith Andrew Pacy born in 1963 and who also became a RM Band Sergeant.
Fred was awarded his Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1968, still in HMS Terrible. Once he left the Royal Marines he continued playing music that he loved so much and also enlisted into the Territorial Army, Royal Hampshire Regiment with service number 24401256 in about 1976, serving a further 12 years and awarded his Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’ (1982) in List 157 of 1988 aged 53.
In later life Fred and Margaret lived at 21 Bentham Road, Gosport and Fred was a founder member of the Royal Marine Association Concert Band in 2006, playing bass and continuing to do so until he was aged 84 in 2019.
Margaret passed away on 12th September 2019 and Fed on 3rd March 2021 aged 85 at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. His funeral service was held at Porchester Crematorium on Tuesday 6th April at 1230h, which sadly was restricted due to covid regulations at the time.

The Story The medals awarded to Laurie Edwin Pacy were acquired from E-Bay on 28th May 2024 and of interest because of the Royal Navy Long Service and Efficiency Medal combination, a long sought after group for his collection.
The medals came as a group of four, a General Service Medal 1918 ‘Malaya’ named to 22730220 PTE.R.WATSON R.A.O.C., Silver Jubilee Medal 1977, Royal Navy Long Service Medal and Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’ (1982) with the vendor’s details being particularly vague and the naming also incorrect on their listing.
However, a risk was taken and a bid placed. Upon receipt the RNLS and EM ’T’ were correctly named to the same person - the main reason for their acquisition - the GSM and SJM77 though, do appear to be self-awards as no record could be found.
Due to the unusual name, Ancestry, Newspaper Archives, Wills and a general Google search revealed sufficient detail for a brief resume of ‘Fred’s’ life to be pieced together.
A pleasing pair of medals that have been coveted for some time and the GSM and SJM 77 will be retained in the event that Fred was indeed entitled and a mis service done unto him.
