Driver William Burnard Payne Army Service Corps
William Burnard Payne
The Man William Burnard Payne enlisted into the Army Service Corps on 1st February 1915 with service number T4-058407. He entered France on 8th October 1915 and was later injured or contracted an illness and was discharged on 23rd October 1916 under paragraph 392 (xvi) of the King's Regulations. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medal and Silver War Badge number 202466.
The Story William Payne is in fact a relative of mine. The medals were given to me in April 1993, by a Great Aunt, Agnes Payne. The medals having belonged to her husband Bill's brother who had died some years earlier. Although it is now too late to ask any direct questions in relation to research it is hoped that ancestry.com may provide a little further useful detail in time, but that is proving difficult. A nice touch is the photograph of William wearing the silver war badge, and although not visible in this cropped picture, holding a cigarette that has clearly been superimposed onto the picture to add a touch of 'class'!
This group of medals is one I have only been able to find a minimal amount of detail on. They are in effect 'work in progress' as one day something additional may well be uncovered. Please feel free to contact me should you know of, or have any information on this man.
