Gunner Thomas Powell Royal Artillery & Air Training Corps
The Man Little detail is currently know about Thomas Powell except that he enlisted into the Royal Artillery, Territorial Army during the late 1930s as a Gunner and with service number 1471796. During World War II he was engaged on a mobile Anti Aircraft Unit which saw service at Manchester, Liverpool and London and later embarkation points on the south coast for D Day. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 and the Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’. In 1950 Tom was appointed as a Warrant Officer in the Air Training Corps in the Greater Manchester Wing and on 1st July 1962 awarded his Cadet Forces Medal. He was involved with sports on his Wing, and in particular swimming. His hobby was collecting military helmets and he was involved with the local Air Crew Association. Tom died during the 1990s.
The Story The medals awarded to Thomas Powell were acquired on E-Bay on 1st November 2014. The vendor having been a personal friend of Toms. The medals were passed to a friend of Tom’s when he died and then onto the vendor, who was contacted and agreed to try and find out some additional detail of Tom’s life. Little extra information can be found on Ancestry.UK due to the large number of Thomas Powells on the site.
This group of medals is one I have not been able to find any detail on. They are in effect 'work in progress' as one day something additional may well be uncovered. Please feel free to contact me should you know of, or have any information on this man.
