Tweddell's Medals
Bombardier Thomas Tweddell Royal Artillery and Police
The Man Thomas Tweddell was born in about 1920. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery Territorial Army with service number 883187 during the late 1930s serving at home during world War II, in a Heavy Anti-Aircraft Unit and later in the York and Lancaster Regiment. For his war service he was awarded the Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 and in Army Order 196/1946 the Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’. Following the war Thomas joined the Police Service serving at least 22 years and being awarded the Exemplary Service Medal. No additional detail is known.
The Story The group of medals awarded to Thomas Tweddell were acquired from E-Bay on 6th September 2020 and of interest because of the double long service combination of the Police Exemplary Service Medal and Efficiency Medal ‘Territorial’ (Ind Imp). Despite initial enthusiasm at the fact Thomas Tweddell seems an unusual name, it became clear that it is in fact quite a popular one, with several Thomas Tweddell’s having been born around 1920 in England. Sadly, despite a number of attempts and internet searches nothing could be found to further lines of research. Thus, only very brief details are currently available for a man who served during World War II followed by a full career in the Police post war.
