Special Constable John Henry Weighton Tayside Police
The Man John Henry Weighton was born on 11th November 1904 at Brax Farm, St Vigeans, Arbroath, Scotland. Son of David a Farmer and Annie Doris nee Nicoll. He was one of eight children, William born in 1895, David, 1896, Edward 1898, Gilbert 1899, Archibald 1901, Charles 1902 and his only sister, Lillias 1903.
The 1911 census of Scotland shows the entire family still living and working at Brax Farm and they have a servant Agnes Annand living with them.
It seems John followed in his Fathers footsteps and became an Assistant Farmer at Brax Farm and on14th September 1939, 11 days after the start of World War II married Agnes Dawson of Perth, in Perth.
As John was in a ‘reserved occupation’ as a Farmer, he was not called up for service during the war, but joined the Tayside Special Constabulary in 1939, serving throughout the war and beyond. He was awarded his Special Constabulary Long Service Medal in 1942 and the first clasp in 1946 – war service counting treble. He was also awarded the Defence Medal.
John continued service in the Special Constabulary after the war and was awarded his second clasp in 1956 aged 51.
In 1967 John and Agnes were living at 19 Golfview Road, Bielside, Aberdeen and John passed away aged 72 in 1977, still living in Arbroath.
